چکیده

We show that for giant magnetoresistive Fe-Cr multilayer samples, the scaling law for the extraordinary Hall constant, RS;r n gives unrealistically large values of n(n52.8–3.3) if we use the resistivity r at an external field B50 as done by previous investigators. With B perpendicular to the film plane, the transverse magnetoresistance saturates at B'3 T in the 4.2–300 K temperature range. This indicates that the Fe layers, although antiferromagnetically coupled at B50, are ferromagnetically aligned only above B'3 T. Therefore, we use r5r(B53 T) in RS;r n and obtain n51.9660.02, which implies that the side-jump mechanism n52 is the dominant scattering process. We emphasize that our interpretation of RS(r) not only evolves from a proper understanding of the magnetic state of the multilayer system but also yields physically meaningful values of the exponent n.

Evidence of spin-wave demagnetization in Fe–Cr giant magnetoresistance multilayers

The temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization of Xe ion-beam sputtered Fe–Cr multilayers has been measured between 5 and 300 K in the presence of a field greater than the saturation field sHsatd. With the application of Hsat, the zero-field antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic Fe layers are forced to align ferromagnetically. We find that the thermal demagnetization of such m...

Oscillations of the transport properties in Ni /Co superlattices

Although metallic multilayers have recently attracted much attention, especially since the discovery of giant magnetoresistance in Fe /Cr multilayers [1], only a small number of true superlattice effects have been experimentally observed. These are the appearance of superlattice Bragg peaks in X-ray diffraction [2], the collective behavior of magnons in magnetic/non-magnetic superlattices [3], ...

Giant Magnetoresistance and Spin Valves I Ming Mao, Chairman Magnetic scattering in Fe–Cr multilayers in the ferromagnetic state at low temperatures

We report here an interpretation of the electrical resistivity ~r! below 15 K of two Fe–Cr multilayers ~30 layers of 20 Å Fe/10 and 12 Å Cr! produced by Xe ion-beam sputter deposition. These multilayers have a negative giant magnetoresistance ~GMR! of ;21% at 4.2 K and Hsat 513 kOe. Very high-resolution resistance measurements ~better than 3 ppm! were made down to 2.3 K at every (100610) mK. Ex...

The Structure of Jahn-teller Polarons in the Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganites

The observation of large negative magnetoresistive effects has generated tremendous scientific and technical interest in the perovskite manganites and related materials. These phenomena are commonly classified under the heading “colossal magnetoresistance” (CMR) to distinguish them from magnetoresistive effects in metals and metal-multilayers. CMR effects are observed in conjunction with the fo...

Atomic Assembly of Giant Magnetoresistive Multilayers

The emergence of metal multilayers that exhibit giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has led to new magnetic field sensors, and approaches for nonvolatile random access memories. Controlling the atomic scale structure across the many interfaces within these multilayers is central to improve the performance of these devices. However, the ability to manipulate atomic arrangements at this scale requires ...
